Profitec Pro 600

The Pro 600 is no longer in production — Profitec's current equivalent is the RIDE, which owners of the older machine refer to simply as what the 600 is called now. What that means in practice is that this is a used-market machine, and a very good one to buy that way, because E61 dual boilers of this build quality last a very long time. Owners describe it as a machine that lasts forever, and the performance that made its reputation is still there: steaming is genuinely fast, with owners reporting milk textured in around ten seconds, and the dual boilers mean brewing and steaming happen without waiting. It is the kind of machine that changes a morning routine rather than a cup.

Buying one secondhand comes down to one question above all others: has it been descaled and run on treated water? Scale buildup is what kills these machines, and it is the only thing owners say is genuinely worth worrying about when assessing a used example — cosmetic condition matters far less. A machine that has lived on hard water without treatment can have problems that cost more than the discount saved. Ask directly about water treatment and service history, and treat a seller who cannot answer as a reason to walk away rather than to negotiate. On pricing, owners consider a good-condition example worth around $2,000 on the used market, so anything dramatically below that is either a favour between neighbours or a machine with a story. Being an E61 it wants a proper warm-up, though owners who worried about that before buying note that a timer or smart plug removes the issue entirely — a point made repeatedly to people who rule out E61 machines on heat-up time alone.

At its original $2,400, and rather less used, the Pro 600's most pointed competition came from ECM. Owners comparing them note the ECM Synchronika could be around a thousand dollars cheaper while offering flow control as an option, and at least one says that if they were upgrading today they would take the ECM specifically because flow control is a requirement for the light roasts they brew. That comparison still holds when shopping used. Against Profitec's own RIDE, which replaced it, owners of the 600 are candid that the upgrade is thin — the meaningful addition is simultaneous boiler heating, while the newer PID display and programmable power scheduling can be replicated with an inexpensive smart plug. Several suggest that if you can still find a Pro 600 in good condition, it is the better value of the two. Buy it used, buy it from someone who treated their water, and expect it to outlast most of what else is on your counter.
