How we compare espresso machines
Pick My Espresso is a comparison site, not a review blog. The whole product is a catalog of 128 machines from 28 brands recorded on one identical spec sheet, so any machine can be lined up against any other and compared like for like. This page is the full account of where that data comes from and how the rankings are built.
Where the specs come from
Specifications are taken from manufacturer spec sheets and manuals, normalized into consistent units — ounces for tanks, inches for dimensions, seconds or minutes for heat-up — so a Breville and a Rocket can sit in the same table without footnotes. Where a manufacturer quotes a marketing number that differs from operating reality (pump pressure is the classic case), we record the stated spec and explain the reality rather than rank on it.
Ratings and review counts are aggregated from public owner reviews across major retailers — thousands of owners per popular machine, not one reviewer’s afternoon with a loaner unit.

How rankings are ordered
Every list on this site — buying guides, brand lineups, category hubs — is ordered by average owner rating, with price as the tiebreak (cheaper wins a tie). Guides first filter the catalog on an objective axis: price caps, built-in grinder, boiler design, width for the compact list. The filter defines who qualifies; the owner rating decides the order. We don’t publish a guide unless at least three machines qualify.
Nothing editorial re-sorts a list. If a machine with a worse rating sits above a better one, that’s a bug, not a deal.
What we never do
No sponsored placements. No pay-to-rank. No reshuffling lists for affiliate commissions. No “editor’s choice” badges sold to the highest bidder. If that ever changes, this page will say so first.
Update cadence
The catalog is reviewed for new machines, discontinued models, and price movement on an ongoing basis. Catalog last updated August 2026.
