De'Longhi Dinamica

The Dinamica sits above De'Longhi's Magnifica family and the reasons to step up to it are concrete rather than cosmetic: a larger maximum coffee dose, so the grinder runs longer and puts more coffee in the puck, a wider range of milk drinks, and a screen that makes programming and maintenance considerably easier than decoding indicator lights. Owners report it as a durable machine — one family has run theirs for more than five years without any problems at all — and it occupies a sensible place in the range for someone who wants more than the entry machines offer without stepping into flagship pricing. The bigger dose is the part that actually changes the coffee, and it is why this model keeps being recommended over the cheaper Magnificas for people who drink their coffee black.

Two things are worth knowing before you buy, and one before you start adjusting anything. The grind dial runs counter to most people's intuition: lower numbers are finer, so a setting of 7 gives a coarser grind than 3.5. New owners regularly turn the dial the wrong way while trying to fix a weak shot and make it worse. As with every De'Longhi bean-to-cup machine, only adjust the grind while the grinder is actually running. The genuine limitation is brew temperature. The Dinamica — like the Eletta Explore — draws a consistent criticism that it does not brew hot enough. For most owners this is a non-issue, but for people who like their coffee properly hot it is a real one, and the machine that gets recommended instead within De'Longhi's own line is the PrimaDonna Soul. If your drinks arrive cooler than you would like, preheating the cup helps but will not fully solve a characteristic of the machine. One thing that looks like a fault but is not: scattered coffee grounds around the brew area are normal, caused by the puck catching the edge on ejection, and owners of these machines simply wipe them up.

At $980 the Dinamica's most direct competition is inside De'Longhi's own range, and the comparison owners make most often is against the Magnifica Plus. They share the same brew group, but the Magnifica Plus grinds a little longer and doses higher, producing slightly better espresso, and it adds a newer touchscreen interface plus a selectable extra shot on any drink — something the Dinamica line requires you to add before or after selecting your drink. It is also frequently cheaper, because it is built in Romania where the Dinamica is made in Italy. Taken together, that makes the Magnifica Plus the machine to compare against carefully rather than assuming the Dinamica is the upgrade. Below it, the Magnifica Start and Evo cost considerably less and, on the widely repeated observation that De'Longhi's machines share their fundamental internals, give up drink variety and interface rather than a completely different class of coffee.
